What this tool does

It reads each JPG, turns it upright using its orientation tag, and saves the pixels as a PNG file. PNG is a lossless format, so saving it adds no new compression artefacts. Your browser converts colours to standard sRGB while doing this, so photos with a wide-gamut colour profile (some cameras and recent phones) can look slightly different.

Converting does not restore detail that the original JPG compression already removed, and it doesn't make the background transparent: a JPG has no transparency to carry over.

When it's useful

  • An upload form, app or print service that only accepts PNG.
  • Editing an image repeatedly: saving as PNG avoids extra JPG loss with every save.
  • Adding text or graphics in a design tool where you want crisp edges preserved.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop one or more JPG/JPEG files.
  2. Press Convert to PNG.
  3. Download each PNG, or all of them as a ZIP.

What to expect

  • File size: PNG files of photos are often several times larger than the JPG they came from. That's normal for lossless storage; the result card shows the exact size.
  • Dimensions: unchanged, unless the photo is larger than your browser can process at once (about 16.7 megapixels on iPhone and Safari). Then it's scaled down and the result says so.
  • Metadata: camera details and GPS location are not copied.

Want a smaller modern file instead? Convert to WebP. Going the other way? PNG to JPG.

Limitations

  • Only JPG/JPEG input. The file type is checked from its contents, not just the name.
  • Up to 50 files, 50 MB each, 300 MB per batch.
  • Very large photos (over about 16.7 MP on iPhone/Safari) are scaled down to fit the browser's limit, and the note on the result says so.
